Letter from the President May 2012

Greetings!

Hello Chapter Members,

This has been a wonderful first part of our year. We have had Luncheon Presentations on Managing the Risks of Special Events, Healthcare Reform, an update on happenings with RIMS on the national level, Pre-employment Integrity Testing and  Internet Risks from an Employment standpoint. The Board would like to thank all of our speakers and attendees for participation in these Luncheon presentations and we expect our fall line up to be just as enticing.

In May our Luncheon speaker was Erin Byrnes of the Berke Law Firm speaking about the risks Employers face relative to the use of the internet by employees. We hope you found the topic very helpful, informative and worth thinking about. The Board again thanks Erin for her visit and is very appreciative of her time. The presentation has been uploaded under the "Presentations" section if you would like to use it for reference.

Additionally, the Greeting Announcements have been uploaded as well, you can use them for your reference. If you have any questions, please contact a Board Member.

Deputies; please mark your calendars. Our next event is a Risk Manager's Only breakfast meeting and the topic is an update to the Arizona Medical Marijuana Law and where it stands now. The date is Wednesday, August 22, 2012, 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM at Discount Tire in Scottsdale. Further announcement will be sent as the date draws near.

Additionally, the Board is always seeking topics of interest to our community. So if you have a challenge you are dealing with, or questions on a certain topic, or other suggestion please contact a Board member or Denise Maier of CorVel (denise_maier@corvel.com) to offer your challenge, question or suggestion. We have a wealth of resources available and would very much like to be of service to our members in this regard.

Are you interested in continuing your education? Please see the Announcements or the Education page where you will find information regarding educational opportunities including information from the Spencer Foundation as well as a current offering of ARM 54. We are working on providing other opportunities including the CRM designation and ARM 55 and will communicate them as they become available. If you have any questions in the meantime, please contact a Board member.

Lastly, don't forget the check the Job Bank page for local opportunities. Many of our friends and supporters are seeking qualified candidates for openings in their companies. Jobs are posted as they are received. If you have a position you would like to have added to our page, please contact Sandy Little (slittle@rdspas.com). If you request a posting, please let us know when the position is filled so we can remove the posting.

On behalf of the Board we would like to thank you for your continued participation and support of our Chapter. This Chapter has something for everyone and all contributions are greatly appreciated. Please check back here and on the Meetings/Upcoming Events tab, or you can contact anyone of the Board Members for more information.

Electric Cars: The Silent Killer

Electric cars are great. They’re unbeatable with gas mileage, saving the owner time and money, and most people feel they’re better for the environment. But all the benefits pale in comparison to the one major drawback of electric cars — they can kill. Battery-powered cars are quiet — too quiet some argue. Pedestrians cannot hear [...]

Food Safety Reporting: The Best of a Bad Topic

Reporting on food safety issues is not the most glamorous topic and, truthfully, it’s sometimes disgusting. But it’s also something that’s important and necessary. Investigative reporting, no matter what the field, requires persistence, fearlessness and a little bit of trickery. Here are a few examples of the best investigative reporting on food safety: “What the [...]
